The Main Church of Alenquer, also known as the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Triana, stands majestically in the heart of the historic center of the town of Alenquer. Its central and prominent position gives it the status of an unmissable landmark in the urban layout, easily accessible to those who venture to explore the streets and squares of this Ribatejo town.
The history of this imposing church dates back to its origins in the 13th century, a period in which its presence in Alenquer was deeply associated with the Order of the Hospital, or the Knights Hospitaller. This connection to one of the most important medieval European military orders gives it a legacy of great historical and spiritual relevance, indelibly marking its origin in the tapestry of time. Over the centuries, and like many other buildings of Portuguese heritage, its structure was profoundly affected by the devastating 1755 earthquake. However, the church underwent successive and profound reconfigurations and reconstructions in the following years, processes that shaped its current image and grandeur.
Regarding its architecture, the building features a single-nave layout, a constructional choice that provides a wide and unobstructed view of the interior space. Inside, the visitor will find four side chapels that enrich the environment, one of which is particularly noteworthy for its elaborate ribbed vault, a detail that highlights the technical and aesthetic particularities of the time of its construction or reconstruction. The ensemble is harmoniously complemented by two side altars and a pulpit that integrates cohesively into the design of the space. Also deserving of special attention are the checkerboard-patterned tiles that adorn some areas, which are in a remarkable state of preservation and contribute significantly to the atmosphere and character of the place. The church has undergone several conservation interventions over time, notably a major restoration carried out in 2001, which ensured the preservation of its valuable heritage for future generations.
