The occupation of the region dates back to prehistoric times. Various peoples such as Greeks, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Alans, Goths and Muslims passed through here, with the Muslims being responsible for the initial fortification.
Conquered by D. Afonso Henriques in 1148. The castle was repopulated and its defenses were rebuilt.
D. Sancho I built the Royal Palace and donated it to his daughter, the Infanta D. Sancha. D. Afonso II granted the first charter to the town in 1212. D. Dinis renewed the charter in 1302 and D. Manuel I in 1510.
During the succession crisis, the town supported D. António, Prior of Crato. After this period, the castle's defense fell into disuse.
Well-preserved remains, including sections of the wall, the Porta da Conceição (Conception Gate) and the Torre da Couraça (Armor Tower).
Built in a strategic position. Crenellated walls with a parapet walk, made of regular stone.
