Praça 25 de Abril is located in the Santo António neighborhood, in the town of Torres Vedras. Its central location boasts a significant historical past, once marking the proximity to one of the gates of the ancient medieval city. Although the ancient walls no longer exist, the site maintains its role as a point of reference and meeting place in the urban area.
This public space is a true open book on the evolution of Torres Vedras. Over time, the square has been known by various names, each reflecting distinct eras of Portuguese history. It began as Largo de Santana, a name associated with a small hermitage located there, next to the city's medieval walls. After the French Invasions, the hermitage was destroyed and, with Liberalism, the space, which had connections to the Convento da Graça, underwent transformations.
In homage to the king of the time, it was designated Largo D. Carlos. Later, with the establishment of the Republic, its name changed to Largo da República. The current name, Praça 25 de Abril, was attributed after the 1974 Revolution, giving it a meaning of freedom and a landmark in collective memory.
In the center of the square stands a notable obelisk, which serves as an important historical symbol. This monument was built to recall the crucial role of Torres Vedras in the Peninsular War, a significant period in Portuguese history. The presence of the obelisk evokes the resilience and contribution of the region to these events, inviting visitors to reflect on its past.
