Garden of Grace

Location:

The Jardim da Graça is located in Praça 25 de Abril, in the Santo António neighborhood, in the heart of Torres Vedras. It is integrated into a historic block, surrounded by the Igreja da Graça and the City Hall. This space establishes a contrast between the surrounding urban road and the tranquil environment of the garden, offering a point of serenity close to the civic center.

Origin and memory:

The garden is situated on the area where the walls of the former Convento da Graça and the Gafaria de Santo André, documented as early as 1309, once stood. Part of these structures was demolished in 1641, leaving traces in the topography of the square. In the center, a commemorative obelisk stands out, dedicated to the Luso-British Army in the Peninsular War, signed by Miguel Jacobetty and inaugurated on October 10, 1954. The fountain that surrounds it reinforces the link to this historical event.

Natural environment:

An avenue of trees with lush canopies forms shaded corridors, where wooden benches allow for rest and contemplation of the space. Ornamental flowers (such as roses) punctuate the parterres, while the murmur of water in the fountain creates an atmosphere of freshness and tranquility.

Aesthetics and atmosphere:

The garden follows a symmetrical design, inspired by the neoclassical style: straight paths and well-defined flowerbeds provide order and visual clarity. On sunny days, the contrast between the light-colored stone of the obelisk and the intense green of the plants accentuates the scenic effect, revealing architectural and landscape details.
