The future Shiva Temple is being erected in the Torres da Bela Vista urbanization, in Santo António dos Cavaleiros, within the municipality of Loures. This area is predominantly residential, situated in a developing urban context. The land designated for the temple's construction was ceded by the Loures Municipal Council, underscoring its integration into the local community. Access is via Rua Mário Ventura Henriques, facilitating orientation for visitors to the area.
The Shiva Temple represents an important milestone for the Hindu community in Portugal. Its history dates back to 1984, with the founding of the Shiva Temple Social Solidarity Association. This association was born from the need to bring together the growing Hindu population residing in Santo António dos Cavaleiros, Portela, and Chelas, and to promote their religious and cultural practices. After years of dedication, the dream of having a dedicated space for worship and community activities began to materialize, culminating in the laying of the first stone in 2019, a decisive step towards the realization of this project.
The Shiva Temple project stands out for its ambition and its intention to preserve traditional Hindu architecture. Conceived by architect José Deodoro Troufa Real, who offered his services, the future complex was designed to accommodate various functionalities. Four distinct sectors are planned: areas dedicated to socio-cultural activities, a central space for worship, a water mirror, known as Kund, and a Memorial Garden. These elements are designed to create a holistic environment that goes beyond a mere prayer space, serving as a meeting point and cultural celebration for the Hindu community and for all those interested in learning about its tradition.
