The Teatro Variedades is located in Lisbon, in the parish of Santo António. It is integrated into the area known as Parque Mayer, a space with a significant history in Lisbon's cultural life. Its position is set within a vibrant urban environment of the capital.
Inaugurated on July 8, 1926, the Teatro Variedades was conceived based on the project by architect Urbano de Castro. It quickly established itself as one of the most important venues for Portuguese revue and comedy theater. For decades, it hosted highly successful shows, where consecrated names of the national artistic scene, such as Beatriz Costa, Mirita Casimiro, and Vasco Santana, figures who marked the golden age of this theatrical genre, shone.
The history of the Teatro Variedades was not without challenges. In 1966, a fire affected the building, which was later restored. It maintained its regular activity until the 1960s and, already in the 1990s, served as a setting for Filipe La Féria's television program “Grande Noite,” which honored the tradition of Parque Mayer. After a long period of closure, which extended for three decades, the theater underwent a profound rehabilitation, recently returning it to the city and the cultural landscape.
The recent intervention at Teatro Variedades, led by architect Manuel Aires Mateus, aimed to equip the space with all the necessary conditions for contemporary shows. The project sought a balance between maintaining the most relevant original elements, such as the auditorium, the stage, and the foyer, and introducing new functional structures. This approach allowed the theater to combine its historical identity with current technical and comfort demands, transforming it into a venue prepared for diverse programming suitable for the contemporary scene.
