The Ana Pereira Theatre is located in Alenquer, on Rua Direita da Praça, an area that reflects the heart of the town. The building occupies a space with history, part of a former Misericórdia property, which gives it a deep connection to the local urban and cultural fabric.

The Genesis of a Scenic Space

The history of this theatre dates back to 1891, when the Sociedade Dramática de Alenquer proposed its construction. The project advanced thanks to a public share subscription, revealing the strong support of the community for art and culture.

The design of the building was by José Juvêncio da Silva, a name already known in Alenquer for other emblematic projects in the town. The decoration of the hall was directed by Manuel José Gonçalves Viana, a professor at the Damião de Góis Industrial Design School, with the support of Luís de Azambuja. Distinctive elements such as the proscenium arch, the royal valance, and the front curtain were completed in 1893, the year the stage hosted its first play, "A Morgadinha de Vale-Flor," by Pinheiro Chagas.

A Homage to Local Talent

The name "Teatro Ana Pereira" pays homage to a notable figure born in Alenquer, Ana Elisa Pereira (1845-1921). From an early age, at the Teatro Ginásio, she began a career that led her to several of the most prestigious national stages, including theatres in Coimbra and Lisbon, such as the Teatro D. Maria II and the Teatro Trindade.

Ana Pereira's career is a testament to her dedication to the dramatic arts, extending to the silver screen with her participation in one of the first Portuguese films, "O Condenado." Currently, the theatre that bears her name continues to be an anchor for local theatrical production, serving as a stage for regional companies and keeping the passion for performance alive in the community of Alenquer.
