Location

The Tapada Nacional de Mafra is located within the geographical area of the municipality of Mafra, close to the famous National Palace. This vast natural and forest area is contiguous to the monument, creating a unique landscape setting that contrasts with the architectural grandeur and offers a refuge of serenity.

Historical Origin

The creation of the Tapada dates back to the 18th century, during the reign of D. João V, after the construction of the National Palace of Mafra. It was conceived as a private space for the leisure of the royal family and the court, also serving as an exclusive hunting ground. This original purpose of noble use contributed to its preservation over the centuries, shaping its identity to this day.

Extension and Protection

With an area exceeding 800 hectares, the Tapada is notable for its size and how it is delimited. It is surrounded by a historic masonry wall, approximately 21 kilometers long. This walled perimeter effectively protects the interior environment, allowing nature to develop and wild animals to live freely.

Wildlife

The interior of the Tapada constitutes a diverse habitat that hosts a remarkable variety of fauna. It is a place where populations of mammals such as fallow deer, red deer, and wild boars can be observed. The Tapada is also important for various bird species, including birds of prey. The wetter areas serve as a refuge for amphibians and reptiles, complementing the rich biodiversity of the space.

Forest Heritage

The Tapada's vegetation cover is one of its greatest natural values. It features a rich and varied forest, resulting from its evolution over time. Notable species include cork oak, stone pine, and different types of oaks, in addition to a wide range of shrubs. Some trees, due to their age or exceptional characteristics, have been classified as Trees of Public Interest, testifying to the forest's antiquity and beauty.

UNESCO Recognition

The cultural and natural importance of the Tapada Nacional de Mafra has been recognized worldwide. Since 2019, it has been part of the site "Royal Building of Mafra, Palace, Basilica, Convent, Walled Garden, and Tapada," included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. This status underscores the exceptional value of the complex that links architectural grandeur to the natural richness of the Tapada.

A Space to Explore

For those seeking contact with nature in a historical and preserved environment, the Tapada offers various possibilities. Visitors can explore its trails, discovering the diversity of flora and the presence of wild fauna. It is a place that invites walking and contemplation, providing an experience of tranquility and immersion in the natural environment surrounding the Palace of Mafra.
