Taborda

Category: Culture and Entertainment > Theatre

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > São Vicente de Fora

Location:

Taborda is located in the parish of São Vicente de Fora, in the city of Lisbon, and stands on the northern slope of the historic São Jorge Castle. Its elevated position offers a privileged perspective over the Mouraria valley and provides a stunning view encompassing a large part of Lisbon, extending to the Tagus River. Its placement on a steep slope reflects the adaptability of Lisbon's architecture to the city's terrain, integrating harmoniously into the oldest urban fabric.

Historical and Architectural Legacy:

This unique building was constructed over ancient conventual facilities, including a small hermitage dating back to the 16th century, formerly belonging to the Society of Jesus. Inaugurated on December 31, 1870, the original project was designed by architect Domingos Parente da Silva. The space was conceived for performances from the outset, incorporating scenery that had been recovered from the Thalia Theatre, which was then destroyed by fire. Taborda's structure is a remarkable example of 19th-century 'pocket theatres,' retaining its auditorium flanked by two galleries, emphasizing the elegance and intimacy of the scenic spaces of the era.

A particularly fascinating element of the building is the chapel integrated into its base. It features side walls adorned with bands of 17th-century polychrome tiles and a striking arch decorated with fragments of Chinese porcelain from the same period, revealing artistic and historical details of great interest.

A Stage in Constant Renewal:

Throughout its existence, Taborda has had an irregular yet consistently resilient cultural activity. In 1965, it was acquired by the Lisbon City Council. In the 1980s and 1990s, the building underwent a significant rehabilitation project, led by architects Nuno Teotónio Pereira and Bartolomeu da Costa Cabral. These works allowed the theatre to reopen in June 1995. Today, Taborda hosts Teatro da Garagem, an experimental company that contributes to Lisbon's cultural vitality, keeping the theatrical tradition alive in this emblematic space.

The building, with its tiered volume, has adapted to the terrain and evolving needs over time. While preserving its original essence, it has expanded its internal areas and opened up to the exterior, allowing visitors to enjoy the light and Lisbon's landscape while exploring its various cultural and artistic offerings. Photography is allowed inside, inviting visitors to capture the unique atmosphere of this historic theatre.
