The Natural History Society is located in the town of Vale de Janelas, part of the municipality of Torres Vedras. This location places the space in an area with proximity to natural elements of geological and paleontological interest, characteristic of the West region, while remaining accessible within the urban context of the municipality.
Established in 1998, this non-profit scientific organization is dedicated to the conservation and promotion of the region's valuable paleontological and geological heritage. Its mission focuses on fossil research, with particular attention to vertebrates, significantly contributing to the knowledge of ancient life. The Natural History Society houses one of the country's most extensive and important fossil collections, including notable specimens of vertebrates and invertebrates from the Late Jurassic period.
In addition to its intense research activity, the Natural History Society plays a central role in sharing scientific knowledge. Through educational initiatives, it seeks to awaken interest in geopaleontology and Earth sciences, making the fossil legacy more accessible to a diverse public. The Society also demonstrates a strong commitment to heritage protection, developing advanced tools, such as a geographical information system, which allows monitoring and safeguarding fossil sites, especially those most vulnerable to coastal erosion. There is also the ambition to create and manage a paleontological museum, consolidating its role as a hub for reference and dissemination.
