The Eucalyptus Trunk is located in Sintra, more specifically in the area of São Pedro de Penaferrim. It is situated within the properties managed by Parques de Sintra Monte da Lua, integrated into the area of Monserrate Pedagogical Farm. Its surroundings are marked by the natural beauty of the Sintra Mountains, with the presence of lush vegetation that characterizes the local landscape.
The Eucalyptus Trunk is, in fact, a remarkable sculpture that transformed a centuries-old eucalyptus tree. This tree, which fell ill due to a fungal infection and needed to be felled, was honored in a unique way: its trunk was kept rooted and transformed into a work of art. Welsh artist Nansi Hemming used a chainsaw to create an imposing 7.5-meter-high totem. This ten-day process resulted in the only totem in Portugal sculpted using this technique on a tree still fixed to the ground.
The totem is not just a work of art; it is a tribute to the rich biodiversity of the Sintra Mountains. Along its almost three meters in diameter, 17 figures of animals and plants that inhabit the mountains are engraved, such as the Bonelli's eagle, the Lucanus cervus beetle, the water lizard, the viper, the holly, and the oak. These representations serve as an invitation to reflect on the natural values of the region and the importance of its preservation, valuing the natural heritage of the mountains and raising awareness among visitors.
Set in a tranquil environment, the Eucalyptus Trunk offers a serene place for a break. It allows visitors to contemplate art and nature together, in a calming setting. It is an invitation to enjoy the quietness and beauty surrounding this natural and artistic monument, ideal for those seeking a moment of connection with the mountain environment and its history.
