The Rose Garden is nestled in the valley within the extensive Monserrate Park, in the town of Sintra. Its privileged position allows visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the Sintra coastline, as well as a unique perspective of Monserrate Palace and its vast lawn, harmoniously integrating the garden into a vast and enveloping landscape.
The origin of this rose garden dates back to the 19th century, during the initial interventions carried out by Francis Cook. For this influential English millionaire, the rose transcended its botanical status, being considered the Queen of Flowers and a strong symbol of love and the British nation. The Rose Garden was designed to embody the mystery and exuberance of oriental gardens, distinguishing itself by its striking fragrance and an atmosphere that evoked the Far East.
Currently, the Monserrate Rose Garden houses a vast and meticulous collection of rose bushes, composed of historic varieties carefully arranged along the valley. The garden covers an area of approximately 6,000 square meters, where about 800 rose bushes thrive, belonging to around 200 distinct species. This diversity offers a vibrant spectacle of colors and aromas, with blooming moments that extend throughout the year.
Following a comprehensive restoration completed in 2011, and a subsequent redesign of its route in 2023, the Rose Garden now invites a tranquil and accessible exploration. Its recovery was marked by the presence of British royals at the inauguration of the renovated space, a moment that highlights the importance of the site, with a rose even being symbolically planted. The paths have been designed to facilitate strolling, with strategic stopping points that encourage visitors to linger, absorbing the diverse colors, shapes, and fragrances of the rose bushes, and fully enjoying the beauty and serenity of this unique garden.
