The Church of São Domingos is located in Casal Sacoto, an area that is part of the locality of Carvoeira and Carmões, in the municipality of Torres Vedras. This setting offers a visiting experience in a tranquil environment, characteristic of the local landscape.
The Church of São Domingos has a legacy that spans several centuries. Although its presence is documented since 1507, in the form of an old hermitage, the building we see today is the result of a significant renovation carried out in the mid-18th century, around 1750. This intervention transformed its original structure, giving it the 18th-century identity that now characterizes it.
The interior of the church is distinguished by its single nave, whose walls are harmoniously clad in marble. The space houses two altars, one of which features a coat of arms and the date 1755, indicating a connection to prominent families of the time. On its side, there is a chapel commissioned in 1630 by Francisco Mendes Trigo, an academic from Coimbra. The choir, dating from the 18th century, is supported by marble columns with Tuscan capitals, and the baptismal font, carved in stone, rests on a cylindrical base.
In the chancel, the marble altarpiece, with its four columns with composite capitals, catches the eye. Here, there is a small polychromed image of Saint Dominic, the patron saint of the church. The artistic heritage also includes notable 17th-century tile panels and a painting from the same period, which depicts the 'Virgin with the Child Interceding for Souls'. In the sacristy, an additional detail is the small marble baptismal font, dated 1772.
