The Silk Fabrics Factory was founded in 1734 by the initiative of the Frenchman Roberto Godin, with the authorization of King D. João V, aiming at the production of high-quality silk fabrics, such as velvets, damasks, and brocades.
This undertaking was part of a larger industrialization movement in Portugal in the 18th century, driven by private investments and foreign technicians. It was one of the largest manufactories of its time, essential for the economic development of the country.
Originally located in Prazeres, the factory was transferred to the Rato neighborhood in 1741, where the main building was constructed. The choice of this location aimed to centralize production and reduce costs.
The factory employed and trained Portuguese apprentices, with the aim of reducing dependence on foreign technicians and promoting local qualification.
Throughout its history, the Factory underwent several financial and management difficulties, which led to its nationalization in 1750. During this period, the administration was under the control of the Crown, reflecting the strategic importance of the factory to the national economy.
In addition to the main building, the factory included housing for the artisans and several attached workshops, creating an industrial community in the Águas Livres neighborhood, later expanded to the Amoreiras neighborhood.
The Factory was known for the production of high-quality silk fabrics, employing innovative techniques and incorporating new designs and patterns attractive to the public. It also had drawing (debuxo) classes to train future masters in the craft.
The factory's prosperity lasted until the end of the reign of D. José I, declining with the arrival of D. Maria I to the throne. The factory was eventually extinguished in 1833, with the sale of its assets at public auction.
