The Tivoli Cinema, also known as the Tivoli Theater, is located on Avenida da Liberdade, one of Lisbon's main avenues, in the parish of Santo António.
Opened in 1924, the Tivoli Cinema was created to be a space dedicated to cinema and other shows, quickly becoming a reference point in Lisbon. The building was designed by architect Raul Lino and is considered a notable example of neoclassical architecture in the city. Since 2015, it has been classified as a Monument of Public Interest.
Over the years, the Tivoli has hosted major names in theater and music, such as conductor Igor Stravinsky and pianists Arthur Rubinstein and Maria João Pires. In addition to cinema, the space is also known for hosting plays and dance performances.
The theater has a capacity of 1149 spectators, making it one of the largest performance halls in the city.
The building stands out for its neoclassical architecture, with an elegant facade and a dome that dominates the structure. Inside, the main hall is sober and refined, with classic decorative details, such as the triangular pediment that frames the stage.
After several changes of ownership and a period of closure, the Tivoli was reopened in 1999 after renovations. Currently, it is known as Teatro Tivoli BBVA, the result of a partnership with the Spanish bank BBVA, and continues to be an important cultural space in Lisbon.
Visitors can attend a variety of events, from classic film screenings to concerts, plays, and dance performances. The central location makes it easy to combine a visit to the Tivoli with a stroll along the elegant Avenida da Liberdade.
The Tivoli was one of the first theaters in Portugal to show sound films, and over the decades, it has been the stage for premieres of great world cinema classics.
