Located on Rua dos Condes, in Santo António, in the heart of Lisbon, the Odeon Cinema is situated in a central and historic area of the city. Its presence contributes to the architectural richness of this area, where buildings that tell the story and urban evolution of the Portuguese capital intertwine.
The Odeon Cinema opened its doors on September 21, 1927, immediately establishing itself as one of the most remarkable spaces dedicated to the seventh art in Lisbon. Over the decades, it played a significant role in the city's cultural life, serving as a meeting point and a testament to the evolution of entertainment habits and the taste for cinematographic art in the capital.
This building is a remarkable example of the Art Deco style, an artistic movement that profoundly marked the early 20th century. Its interior reveals unique decorative details, such as the stage pediment, the ceiling in verbena wood, and a distinctive neon chandelier. Particularly noteworthy is its suspended side box, an architectural element that contributes to the Odeon's uniqueness in the landscape of old Lisbon cinemas, being the only one in the city to feature this type of decoration.
The heritage value of the Odeon Cinema is widely recognized, with the building having been classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1996, attesting to its historical and architectural importance. Currently, despite being closed and showing visible signs of degradation, there are plans for its renovation, which aim to preserve its original architectural elements, such as the balconies, the canopies, and, in particular, the emblematic Art Deco pediment, ensuring the maintenance of its identity within the urban fabric of Lisbon.
