The Ginásio Theatre was inaugurated in 1845 and was an important cultural space in Lisbon, especially known for Portuguese-style revue theatre in the late 19th century. Francisco Taborda, a famous Portuguese actor, began his career here in 1846.
In 1921, the theatre was destroyed by a fire, which resulted in the death of one person. Currently, only the original facade remains.
The facade of the Ginásio Theatre has been preserved and classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1983. The site where the theatre stood has been transformed into the Espaço Chiado shopping gallery. During the renovation, ruins of the Fernandina Wall were discovered and preserved, and can now be visited inside the gallery.
The theatre's facade is an example of neo-classical architecture and is included in the classification of Pombaline Lisbon, an area of great historical value. It is also located in the protection zone of São Jorge Castle and the remains of the Lisbon city walls.
