Lisbon Cathedral, also called the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maior, is located in the heart of the city, in the Santa Maria Maior neighborhood. The construction of the cathedral began in the 12th century, after the reconquest of Lisbon from the Moors by D. Afonso Henriques.
The cathedral features a combination of architectural styles, such as Romanesque and Gothic, resulting from the various reconstructions over the centuries, especially after earthquakes damaged the building.
Before the Cathedral was built, the site probably housed a mosque, reflecting the cultural and religious diversity of Lisbon's history.
The façade of the Cathedral is marked by two imposing towers and a central rose window. The interior has an austere and medieval atmosphere, highlighting the triforium (an open gallery) and several chapels dedicated to saints.
The Gothic cloister, dating from the reign of D. Dinis, preserves archaeological excavations that reveal vestiges of Roman and Muslim eras. In addition, it is possible to visit funerary chapels of important historical figures.
The relics of Saint Vincent, patron saint of Lisbon, which were brought to the site in the 12th century, are kept in the Cathedral. This is one of the great symbols of the cathedral.
After the 1755 earthquake, the main chapel was rebuilt, with decoration in colored marbles and religious panels. The tombs of D. Afonso IV and his wife also rest here.
The Cathedral has three organs, the oldest dating from the 18th century. The most recent organ was installed in 1964, providing a unique sound to religious events.
A visit to the Cathedral offers a privileged view of Lisbon, especially from the cloister. This space provides an atmosphere of tranquility, ideal for those seeking a break while exploring the history of the city.
