Located in Lisbon, in the Alfama district, between Largo de Santo Estêvão and Largo do Chanceler. The area also includes Beco do Chanceler.
The palace has an irregular "J" shape and occupies a large part of Rua de Santo Estêvão. The building is the result of the union of several constructions over the centuries, with varied architectural influences.
The Palácio dos Azevedo Coutinho has characteristics of 17th and 18th century architecture. Its facade and structure have been altered by several works, including reconstructions after the 1755 earthquake and the fire of 1911. Despite the changes, it maintains significant historical elements, such as tiles and a Gothic window.
It was the residence of important figures such as the Chancellor-Major of the Kingdom and, later, the Secretary of the House of Braganza. The palace's name is linked to historical events and noble families of the time.
The space around the palace changed with the demolition of the parish church in 1733 and the remodeling of the 19th century. In 1911, the fire destroyed part of the building, leading to changes in the configuration of Largo de Santo Estêvão.
The palace has passed through several hands over the years. In 1847, it was bequeathed to Luís da Costa de Azevedo Coutinho. More recently, it belonged to the Vaz de Almada family, and is currently in the hands of M. Rita Vaz de Almada and her children.
