The Sul e Sueste River Station is located next to Praça do Comércio, in the heart of Lisbon. Easy access via Avenida Infante Dom Henrique.
Designed by Cottinelli Telmo, the building features an Art Déco style, characterized by a reinforced concrete structure with large glass surfaces. The interior includes geometric decorative elements and tile panels representing various railway stations in the South and Southeast of Portugal.
Inaugurated on May 28, 1932, the station served as a terminal for trains from Barreiro, on the Linha do Alentejo (Alentejo Line). The initial plan included the construction of a railway and river station, but it was altered to focus only on the river service.
In November 2019, a major rehabilitation project began in the area around Praça do Comércio, including the renovation of the river station.
The station is used by catamaran ships that connect Lisbon and Barreiro. It has connections with several Carris buses and the Lisbon Metro, facilitating access to other parts of the city.
The construction of the station was preceded by lengthy debates and planning since the 19th century. Initially, a temporary station was used until the completion of the definitive station in 1932, after several modifications to the project and location.
The original building was designed to showcase the modernity of the time and the use of reinforced concrete. In addition, it was one of the first to incorporate large glazed areas and a functional and elegant design.
