The Pavilion of Portugal is located on Alameda dos Oceanos, in Parque das Nações, Lisbon. This is a contemporary and dynamic area, integrated into the city's riverfront.
This building was designed for the 1998 World Exposition, the renowned Expo '98, which took place in Lisbon under the theme "The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future." The Pavilion represented the host country at this internationally prominent event, which marked an important era for the city and for Portugal.
The design of the Pavilion of Portugal is by the prestigious Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. Its most distinctive feature is the impressive concrete canopy, which rises over the main entrance and seems to hover with remarkable lightness. This innovative element gives the building a sense of openness and is often praised for its elegance and the way it dialogues with the surrounding light and space, resembling a gently placed sheet of paper.
Following the conclusion of Expo '98, the Pavilion of Portugal was classified as a Monument of Public Interest in 2010. Currently, the space is managed by the University of Lisbon, which uses it as a venue for various educational, scientific, and cultural activities. Its relevance transcends architecture, establishing itself as a symbol of Portugal's ability to host and promote events of global reach, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge and culture in the heart of the capital.
