The Santa Iria de Azóia Urban Park is located in the Alto das Eiras area, an integral part of the locality of Santa Iria de Azóia, in the municipality of Loures. This green space is situated in an area that transitions between urban and rural environments, offering a unique setting that combines proximity to the city with the tranquility of nature. Its location allows for easy access for all visitors, including those with reduced mobility.
From various points in the park, it is possible to enjoy a broad perspective of the surrounding landscape, encompassing everything from the Tagus estuary and its south bank to the areas to the north and west.
This park has a unique history, resulting from a remarkable environmental recovery intervention. The site where this green space now extends was, between 1988 and 1996, a sanitary landfill. After its sealing, a process of transformation and utilization took place, converting it into a vast and inviting public space for leisure and social interaction. This requalification represents a significant example of how a site with a challenging past can be regenerated and given back to the community as a valuable asset for well-being and nature.
With an area of approximately 24 hectares, Santa Iria de Azóia Urban Park offers multiple options for enjoying time outdoors. It is an inviting place for peaceful strolls, allowing for the practice of various physical activities.
The park features pedestrian and cycling paths extending over three kilometers, ideal for walking or cycling. For the more active, there is an informal athletics track, an exercise circuit, and specific areas for mountain biking (MTB). Families with children will find a playground. For moments of culture and leisure, there is also an outdoor amphitheater. The surface, mostly compacted gravel, and gentle slopes make the routes accessible and pleasant for most people.
Beyond leisure opportunities, the park is a place where scenic beauty intertwines with environmental education. The panoramic views over the Tagus and its surroundings, extending from the south bank to the northern and western areas, provide an appealing setting for those seeking a moment of contemplation or a photography spot.
The space also includes an area dedicated to renewable energy, inviting reflection on sustainability and technological innovation. This aspect underscores the intention to link leisure with knowledge, enriching each visitor's experience in a natural and recovered environment.
