Faria Mantero Residence

Category: Civil Architecture > Manor House

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > Restelo

Location

Situated in the heart of Restelo, one of Lisbon's most tranquil and tree-lined neighborhoods, Residência Faria Mantero stands on a small, landscaped square, lending it a harmonious presence within its urban setting. The location is part of the Special Protection Zone of the Belém Tower, ensuring the preservation of its heritage and surroundings. The property is enclosed by a walled garden, which features mature trees, lawn, a small pond, and some sculptures, creating a serene refuge within the city.

The rear garden, with its geometric layout of radial hedges, culminates in a picturesque cross, adding an element of contemplation to the outdoor space. This integration of green areas contributes to the unique atmosphere that characterizes the residence.

Architectural Character

Residência Faria Mantero, built in the 1940s, is a notable example of the architectural revivalism that marked the Portuguese landscape of the time. Designed by architect Vasco Regaleira, the villa features an irregular 'U' shaped plan, with articulated volumes that incorporate various verandas and towers, one cylindrical and one square.

Its facades, in light tones and finished with double eaves, are distinguished by the stonework on the corners and window frames. It is particularly interesting to observe the details of Neo-Gothic and Neo-Manueline revivalism in the openings, enriched with delicate vegetal decoration. Inside, if it were possible to explore, one would find tiled floors with polychrome ceramic inlays, worked wooden ceilings, and false ribbed vaults, reflecting a refined and eclectic aesthetic.

A Cultural and Philanthropic Legacy

More than just a residence, this building carries a profound history of generosity and appreciation for culture. It was the home of Enrique Mantero Belard, an influential businessman of the 20th century, and his wife, D. Gertrudes Verdades de Faria. D. Gertrudes cherished the wish that, after her passing, the house would become a true home for citizens distinguished by cultural merit but who found themselves in need. Enrique Mantero Belard fulfilled this dream by donating the property for this purpose.

Since 1986, the site has functioned as a welcoming space that honors the philanthropic spirit of its founders. Over the years, it has been the residence of several prominent figures in Portuguese arts and culture, such as the painter and illustrator Maria Keil, the fado singer Teresa Tarouca, the writer Olga Gonçalves, the poet António Ramos Rosa, and the painter Barata Moura. Annually, the residence's garden hosts the awarding of the Nunes Correa Verdades de Faria Prizes, instituted by Enrique Mantero Belard's will, which aim to recognize those who contribute most to the well-being of the elderly and the advancement of medicine, particularly in heart diseases, as a tribute to his wife.
