The "Reminiscence" is located next to Ribeira das Naus, an emblematic space that stretches along the bank of the Tagus River in Lisbon. This area, situated in the Cais do Sodré urbanisation, serves as a fluid transition between the city and the river. From this point, it is possible to enjoy a wide view of the estuary and the south bank, integrating the monument into the urban and fluvial landscape that characterises the Portuguese capital.

Homage to a Cultural Figure

This monument is a homage to José de Almada Negreiros, a central figure in Portuguese modernism. A multifaceted artist with a legacy encompassing painting, drawing, literature, and theatre, Almada Negreiros profoundly impacted 20th-century culture in Portugal. The work celebrates his artistic contribution and the strong connection the creator maintained with the city of Lisbon, present in much of his production.

From Line to Volume

The conception of "Reminiscence" is based on one of Almada Negreiros' most well-known self-portraits, titled "Auto-Reminiscência". The architects Catarina and Rita Almada Negreiros, the artist's great-granddaughters, were responsible for the project, seeking to transpose the original drawing's two-dimensional line into a three-dimensional form in public space. The piece, which stands as a drawing actualised in metal, reflects the essence of Almada's gaze and expressiveness.

The choice of Ribeira das Naus for the installation of "Reminiscence" allows the figure of Almada Negreiros, through the work, to direct his gaze over the waters of the Tagus. This strategic position confers a particular symbolism upon the monument, perpetuating the artist's presence in the Lisbon landscape and connecting his creative spirit to the river. "Reminiscence" invites observers to share this attentive and contemplative gaze over the vastness of the estuary and the city's dynamism.
