The Reduto do Passo, also known as Forte do Paço, is situated in the rural area of Casal dos Cochos, in the locality of São Pedro da Cadeira, municipality of Torres Vedras. Erected at an altitude of 33 meters, this strategic point offers a broad perspective of the surrounding landscape, testifying to its importance in the defensive context in which it was established.
This redoubt is one of the military works built in the 19th century that make up the famous Lines of Torres Vedras. This impressive defensive system was constructed to protect the Portuguese capital during the French Invasions. The Reduto do Passo, in particular, was designed to house a garrison of approximately 250 soldiers and several artillery pieces, demonstrating its crucial role in the first line of defense.
Inside the Reduto do Passo, there is a unique feature: the remains of an old mill. During the period of the French Invasions, this mill was adapted and transformed into a powder magazine, i.e., a gunpowder storage. This adaptation highlights the ingenuity and urgency of the defensive measures implemented at the time. Today, the Reduto do Passo remains a historical-cultural landmark, inviting reflection on the events that shaped Portugal's history.
