Belmonte Redoubt is located in the rural area of São Pedro da Cadeira, in the municipality of Torres Vedras, more specifically in the Casal dos Cochos area. It is situated at an altitude of 53 meters, offering a rural setting that invites tranquility and observation of the surrounding landscape.
This 19th-century redoubt is part of the first line of the impressive defensive system of the Lines of Torres Vedras. Built in 1810, by order of General Wellesley, later known as the Duke of Wellington, its construction was fundamental for the defense of Lisbon against the French invasions during the Peninsular War. Major Brandão de Sousa gave it the name "Belmonte," which still identifies it today as a crucial element in this network of fortifications.
Its historical importance lies in the active role it played in containing the advance of Napoleonic troops, particularly those commanded by General Massena. A visit to the site allows one to contemplate a piece of Portuguese and European military history that marked an era of confrontations.
Designed to house a garrison of approximately 250 soldiers, Belmonte Redoubt was originally equipped with four 9-pounder artillery pieces. Although time has altered part of its appearance, it is still possible to discern the features of its military architecture.
The structure of the fort, including the surrounding ditch, offers insight into the fortification strategies and techniques of the 19th century. Currently, Belmonte Redoubt stands as a historical-cultural landmark, inviting visitors to discover its past and contemplate the rural environment in which it is situated.
