The Redoubt of Gentias stands in the locality of Gentias, within the municipality of Torres Vedras. It is situated in a rural area, positioned at an altitude of approximately forty meters, which affords it a natural and serene setting. Its location provides a perspective of the surroundings, typical of the landscape in this part of the Lisbon region.
This redoubt is a military structure dating back to the 19th century, a period of great instability in Europe. It is part of the extensive network of fortifications known as the Lines of Torres Vedras. This complex defensive system was built with a fundamental purpose: to protect Lisbon from external invasions, particularly during the Peninsular War. The Redoubt of Gentias was one of the numerous works that comprised the first line of defense, demonstrating its strategic importance at the time.
Conceived as a vital piece in the defense of the territory, the Redoubt of Gentias was designed to house a considerable garrison. It was prepared to accommodate up to two hundred and twenty soldiers and was equipped with heavy artillery, featuring four 12-pounder cannons, crucial elements for its deterrent and combat capabilities. Its current designation, or variations thereof such as "Forte Gentias," was already referenced in military maps of the era, underscoring its identity and function from the early years of the 19th century.
After its period of active military use, the Redoubt of Gentias has become a landmark that contributes to the historical and cultural memory of the region. Currently, the structure is recognized and protected as an integral part of the Lines of Torres Vedras, a vast classified ensemble that testifies to a decisive chapter in Portugal's history. Its preservation allows visitors to understand the scale and strategic intelligence behind these fortifications.
