The Milharosa Redoubt is located in the Benfica area, in the locality of Ventosa, within the municipality of Torres Vedras. Erected at an altitude of 107 meters, this site is strategically positioned on the crest of Casal da Serra. From there, it offers a view over the village and the surrounding hills of Benfica, embedded in a predominantly rural environment.

A Landmark of Historical Defense

This redoubt, classified as Military Work nº 136, constitutes an integral part of the first line of the imposing defensive system of the Lines of Torres Vedras. Built in the 19th century, it played a crucial role during the French Invasions, serving as one of the many fortifications erected to protect Lisbon. Its existence is a testament to the military engineering of the time and the Luso-British effort in defending national territory.

The Structure and Its Function

The Milharosa Redoubt was designed as a closed battery, a defensive typology that allowed for high troop protection. Its main function was to house a military garrison, estimated at around 150 soldiers. Historical records indicate that it was prepared to operate with four 12-pounder artillery pieces, underscoring its firepower and importance in the strategy of containing the invading forces.

Today, the Milharosa Redoubt is recognized as an important historical and cultural landmark, forming part of the classified heritage of the Lines of Torres Vedras.
