The Royal Tannery of the Village of Povos is located in the locality of Povos, within the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira. Situated in the Cova da Camela area, this historic structure marks the landscape of the former Lugar de Povos, offering a perspective on the urban development and industrial history of the Ribatejo region.
This imposing industrial complex, whose initial construction dates back to 1729, is a notable example of the industrialization policy promoted by King John V. The Royal Tannery of Povos was one of the first large factory units in the country, dedicated to the production of tanned leather. Its activity extended for more than two centuries, playing a fundamental role in the local and national economy until the mid-20th century.
The architecture of the Royal Factory reflects the style and needs of an 18th-century industrial unit. Despite being currently derelict and showing signs of degradation, it is still possible to glimpse the scale and importance it once held. A distinctive element of the complex is the existence of a private chapel, dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Lapa, which was built in 1736 and opened for worship in 1741, evidencing the factory's autonomy and social significance at the time.
The historical and architectural relevance of the Royal Tannery of the Village of Povos is officially safeguarded by its classification as a Monument of Public Interest, a distinction awarded in 2010. This recognition underscores the exceptional value of the property as a testimony to Portuguese industrial architecture and its importance for understanding the country's economic and social history, even in the face of current conservation challenges.
