Frielas, a locality integrated into the municipality of Loures, within the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, forms the setting for the Folkloric and Ethnographic Group "Os Frieleiros". Despite its proximity to large urban centers, this area maintains a connection to its roots and popular traditions. It is within this environment that the group is integrated, actively contributing to the preservation and appreciation of the region's cultural heritage.
The history of the Folkloric and Ethnographic Group "Os Frieleiros" began in January 1984, as a group initially dedicated to children. Over time, and through a process of reorientation, the group embraced a new direction. It developed in-depth research, which included consulting bibliographic sources and conducting ethnographic collection in the locality of Frielas and surrounding areas. This commitment allowed for the formation of a group with a strong ethnographic character, bringing together participants from various generations. In 1986, this identity was officially established, adopting the designation that characterizes it today.
Authenticity is a distinguishing mark of the Group "Os Frieleiros", evidenced by its commitment to historical and cultural fidelity. The costumes displayed by the group members are careful replicas of the garments commonly worn by the inhabitants of Frielas between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Likewise, the repertoire of music and songs performed reflects the popular traditions and genuine songbook of the region. This ethnographic rigor allows the group to function as a dynamic repository of Frielas' popular culture, offering a glimpse into its artistic and social manifestations of yesteryear.
In addition to representing local folklore, the Group "Os Frieleiros" plays a significant role in promoting cultural exchange. The group hosts an international folklore festival, an event that annually brings together different cultures and traditions from various parts of the world. This initiative highlights the group's vocation for sharing and celebrating cultural diversity, allowing visitors to experience the richness of national and foreign folklore. It is a testament to the group's dynamism and its reach within the cultural landscape.
