Quinta do Espírito Santo is located in the Espírito Santo neighbourhood, in the town of Odivelas. It is integrated into the urban fabric of the municipality, with main access from Rua Dr. Alexandre Braga. Its location makes it a point of interest that can be easily incorporated into a visit to the central area of Odivelas.
In the heart of Quinta do Espírito Santo stands a manor house whose origins date back to the 18th century. This building, which served as a holiday home for the family of António Maria Bravo in the 19th century, stands out for its civil architecture characteristic of the period. It features a rectangular plan, with two floors and an attic with dormer windows, elements that compose its distinct profile. The main gate, made of wrought iron, is supported by robust pillars, topped with urns, marking the entrance to this historic space.
Inside the manor house, it is possible to observe wall paintings that reveal a decorative program with neoclassical inspiration. These works of art were adapted to a rural context, reflecting the strong connection to nature, a primary source of creativity at the time. Some attribute these paintings to the well-known, albeit mysterious, "Mestre Basalisa". The property has been recognized as being of Municipal Interest since 1996, highlighting its heritage importance.
Beyond the manor house, a small garden with a geometric layout invites contemplation. This green space, which once extended significantly, is a testament to the importance attributed to nature and its aesthetic ordering during the Baroque period. The garden was designed to offer an environment of serenity and beauty, harmonizing with the architecture of the manor house.
Among the most notable elements of the garden are two fountains that enrich the environment. One of them features a shell-shaped back, adorned with tiles depicting a vase of flowers, while the other is distinguished by its mottled motifs. In the center of the garden, a limestone fountain, with a circular plan and scalloped walls, constitutes a focal point. The space is enhanced by the presence of centuries-old trees and a lake, offering various secluded spots with benches for visitors to rest.
Quinta do Espírito Santo was part of a group of old estates in the Odivelas region, being mentioned in documents at least since 1852. Its designation seems to originate from a hermitage dedicated to the Holy Spirit that existed on the site. The property, which has belonged to the municipality since 2009, underwent a thorough architectural and structural rehabilitation, with the aim of preserving its true essence and historical heritage. This process culminated in the opening of the space to the public in 2023.
Currently, the manor house and garden serve as a municipal hub dedicated to economic activities and an exhibition space. This revitalization allows Quinta do Espírito Santo to be a place that links its rich past to the present cultural and functional life of the municipality of Odivelas, offering an enriching experience to those who visit it.
