It is situated in a predominantly rural environment, nestled in a valley that gives the location an isolated and tranquil atmosphere. This natural setting is a distinctive element for the property, which was also once known as Quinta de Alpriate.

Heritage and Architectural Design

This property, formerly known as Quinta de Alpriate, was a leisure estate belonging to the Dukes of Lafões, a family of great importance in Portuguese history. Built at the end of the 18th century, Quinta do Duque is a notable example of Neoclassical architecture in Portugal.

Its residential manor house is characterized by an imposing and symmetrical facade, spread over two floors. It features three distinct sections, with the central one slightly recessed and preceded by an elegant balcony that extends across its entire width. This balcony is supported by fluted columns and adorned with an intricate balustrade, lending the building a beautiful aesthetic effect. The openings on the upper floor have segmental arches, a detail that reinforces its architectural language.

The Historic Gardens

An integral part of the Quinta do Duque complex is its garden. Although the years have left their mark, the original design of a French-style garden, characterized by its boxwood patterns, can still be glimpsed. This leisure space, which once complemented the grandeur of the manor, evokes how the nobility of the era conceived their recreational environments, inviting the imagination to picture its past splendor.

The Legacy of Time

Currently, Quinta do Duque is in a state of abandonment and degradation, yet it still retains its aura and the capacity to bear witness to its rich history. Despite transformations over time, including a fire in the early 20th century that led to a remodeling, the architectural ensemble and its old utilitarian facilities allow for an understanding of the magnitude the estate once possessed. Its imposing structure, now more visible on the rural horizon after the removal of some surrounding vegetation, highlights its presence in the valley and invites contemplation of its historical and architectural value.
