Located in the area known as Pomar das Chaves, within the parish of Queluz e Belas, in the municipality of Sintra, the Firefighter Monument occupies a prominent point in the urban fabric. This public space is situated in a residential area, offering a tranquil and accessible environment for visitors. Its position allows for clear observation of the work, integrated into daily local life.
The Firefighter Monument emphasizes collective memory and community gratitude. It was inaugurated on November 24, 2002, marking the thirty-fifth anniversary of a significant event in the region: the 1967 floods. In that year, intense rains caused the Jamor River to overflow, leading to significant loss of life and property. This work pays specific tribute to the Volunteer Firefighters of Belas, honoring their service and, in particular, the sacrifice of those who lost their lives in rescue efforts during that calamity. It is a symbol of the deep respect the community dedicates to its firefighters.
This creation is by the Portuguese artist Bottelho, known for his ability to combine different materials to bring profound messages to life. The monument harmoniously integrates elements of bronze and concrete, giving it a robust and expressive presence. The inclusion of water in its design adds a dynamic and symbolic element, which can evoke both the force of nature and the fluidity and resilience associated with the actions of firefighters. The sculptural ensemble offers an interesting visual perspective, where the solidity of the materials contrasts with the vivacity of the water.
