Pró-Memória is located in A dos Cunhados, a locality that is part of the municipality of Torres Vedras. This area stands out for its predominantly rural environment, set within a landscape characterized by green expanses and the proximity of the Atlantic coast, which defines the identity of the western region. The association is located in the heart of the village, playing an active role in its cultural and community life.
Founded in April 1997, the Pró-Memória Cultural and Ethnological Association emerged from a commitment to preserve and disseminate the heritage of A dos Cunhados. Born from a local heritage survey project, the association is dedicated to safeguarding the collective memory of the parish, promoting the culture and traditions that have shaped the community's identity over time. Its continuous work aims to ensure that historical and ethnographic knowledge remains alive and accessible to everyone.
One of the pillars of Pró-Memória's activity is the Watermill Interpretation Centre. This space is the result of the careful restoration of an old watermill, a building that bears witness to the importance of milling for local subsistence and culture. Here, visitors can explore the history and detailed operation of water-powered mills, understanding the journey from grain to bread. The centre offers an authentic perspective on the daily practices and economic activities that shaped the region for centuries, providing an immersion into the rural past.
Pró-Memória extends its commitment to safeguarding memory through the publication of various literary works. These books cover a range of topics, from the deep history of the watermill and its millers, collected through research and oral testimonies, to accounts of life and trades in the 20th century in the parish, told in the first person by those who experienced them. There are also didactic publications that explore the cycle of bread, seeking to connect generations through the historical and cultural narratives of A dos Cunhados.
