Category: Civil Architecture > Building

District: Lisboa > Lisboa > Lisboa > Campo de Ourique

Location

Situated in Campo de Ourique, one of Lisbon's most traditional areas, this building is set within an urban environment that invites a leisurely stroll. Its corner position, between Rua Saraiva de Carvalho and Rua Ferreira Borges, allows for a broad view of its facades, which integrate particularly well into the neighborhood's urban landscape.

The building is located in an area classified as being of Municipal Interest since 1978 and is covered by the Protection Zone of the notable Aqueduct of the Free Waters, an aspect that underscores its importance in the city's heritage.

Architectural Design and Style

Built between 1910 and 1911, this property is a significant example of eclectic architecture from the early 20th century in Lisbon, with a notable influence of the Art Nouveau style. With five floors, including the ground floor, its volume stands out for its unusual design. At the corner, the first two floors are prominent, elegantly projecting with an enclosed balcony, and the top floor is crowned by a small tower above an ornamental parapet.

The arched openings are delicately framed with stonework on the ground floor. On the upper floors, the painted plaster displays rich floral decoration, typical of Art Nouveau. The intricate wrought and cast iron railings, present on the balconies and windows, complement the decorative expression of the ensemble, inviting contemplation of the artistic details.

The Legacy of Ernesto Korrodi

The design of this building is by the architect Ernesto Korrodi (1870-1944), a prominent figure in Portuguese architecture at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. His work is widely recognized for its ability to harmonize different styles and for its meticulous attention to decorative elements, qualities clearly visible in this example in Campo de Ourique.

Observing this building offers a perspective on the transition of eras and styles that shaped Lisbon's urban landscape. It represents a milestone in the city's modern construction, highlighting the appreciation for aesthetics in both residential and commercial spaces of that period.
