Vale Pombas Beach is located in the town of the same name, Vale Pombas, within the municipality of Lourinhã, in the Lisbon district, bathed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It is characterized by a coastal setting shaped by imposing cliffs that define the local landscape.
The surrounding environment is distinctly natural, with the presence of these rock formations lending a rugged and scenic look to the coast, inviting observation of the coastal geology.
This beach features a moderately sized sandy area, often divided in the center by a group of rock formations that extend towards the waterline. At the ends of the beach, the cliffs are taller and are punctuated by various rocky outcrops that enrich the coastal morphology.
In the northern part of the beach, where the cliff is lower and the sandy area is generally wider, a small waterfall emerges, flanked by a green lawn, an element that adds a distinctive feature to the local landscape.
It is important to note that during high tide, the available sandy area for visitors is considerably reduced. Additionally, this beach is unsupervised.
Vale Pombas Beach holds significant value for its geological and paleontological record. The beach is scientifically recognized for the important discoveries that have been made there.
In 1996, this site was the scene of a major scientific discovery: the identification of the fossilized bones of an herbivorous dinosaur. This species, previously unknown to the scientific community, was formally named Zby Atlanticus, making the beach a landmark for those interested in paleontology and the region's rich natural history.
