São Pedro do Estoril Beach is integrated into the Historic Urban Centre of the locality of the same name, in the municipality of Cascais. Situated in a naturally sheltered cove, the beach stretches along the Atlantic coast, flanked to the west by the prominent rock formation of Pedra do Sal and to the east by a jetty. Its surroundings allow visitors to appreciate the beauty of the coastline, with paths that follow the cliffs and offer sea views.
This beach features a sandy area that varies considerably in size depending on the tide, proving quite extensive during low tide. Its waters, clear and with the characteristic Atlantic temperature, feature the presence of submerged rock formations that become visible when the sea recedes. At these times, small natural pools form among the rocks, inviting exploration of coastal marine life. The beach benefits from a certain shelter from the winds, due to the protection offered by the surrounding cliffs.
Sea conditions at São Pedro do Estoril Beach vary throughout the year. While waters tend to be calmer during summer months, it is in autumn and winter that more consistent waves form, making it a point of interest for surfing and bodyboarding. The area west of the beach is part of the Avencas Marine Protected Area, a unique coastal tide pool ecosystem, which stands out for its diversity of aquatic flora and fauna.
The imposing nature of Pedra do Sal, which frames the beach to the west, is a remarkable geological feature. Composed of limestones and marls dated 90 to 120 million years ago, this rock formation historically played a role in salt collection. This area also holds traces of a prehistoric necropolis, whose archaeological finds, although the original structures no longer exist due to erosion, can be observed at the Museum of Cascais Village. The locality of São Pedro do Estoril itself was, in the past, known as "Cai Água" (Water Falls), a name referring to how the Ribeira de Caparide stream flows into the sea at this location. In the late 19th century, the beach's waters and mud were valued for their therapeutic qualities.
