Porto Chão Beach is situated on the coastline of Portugal, integrated into the Cambelas area, a zone belonging to the locality of São Pedro da Cadeira, in the municipality of Torres Vedras. Facing the vast Atlantic Ocean, this beach is set within a predominantly natural landscape, characterized by the proximity of fields and the uninterrupted scenery of the Portuguese coast.
Characterized by a moderate stretch of sand, approximately one and a half kilometers long, Porto Chão Beach is marked by the imposing presence of a steep, rocky cliff. This geological formation runs along the entire length of the beach, giving it a wild and secluded atmosphere. The interaction between the sea and the rock defines the landscape of this place, creating a distinct environment for visitors.
The experience of visiting Porto Chão Beach is intimately linked to the rhythm of the tides. Its sandy stretch sometimes only becomes fully visible and accessible during low tide. It is essential to be aware of the tidal regime, as high tide can completely submerge the sandy area, significantly altering the beach's configuration and the space available for enjoyment.
This stretch of coastline is also a place with history, having been the scene of a remarkable maritime event. It was precisely at Porto Chão Beach that the Dutch refrigerated cargo ship «Shamrock Reefer» ran aground on October 2, 1970. The vessel, which was en route between Rotterdam and Cape Verde, was deliberately run aground by its commander to prevent it from sinking on the high seas, thus safeguarding the crew. This episode remains a testament to the force of nature and human resilience, marking the landscape with the memory of a shipwreck averted.
Its cliffs hold geological traces of great interest. Along the rock formations, it is possible to identify the presence of marine and forest fossils, which tell a story of millions of years. These natural elements offer a perspective on the geological evolution of the region and the life that once inhabited these spaces, inviting observation and study.
