Located in the town of Caxias, in the municipality of Oeiras, Caxias Beach is situated within the urban area of Quinta da Terrugem. Its position parallel to the marginal road offers unique accessibility for those seeking a coastal space near the Lisbon metropolitan area. The beach is one of the first considerable stretches of sand visible along the coast when coming from the capital.
Caxias Beach is distinguished by a sandy area that extends in different sections. The largest of these sand portions is located between the Forte da Giribita area and the mouth of a local stream, complemented by two other smaller areas. Its waters are usually calm and tranquil, inviting serene swims. Its natural bay configuration provides shelter from the wind, making it a pleasant place even on breezy days.
The profile of Caxias Beach is notably marked by the presence of two significant historical constructions: the Fort of São Bruno, to the east, and the Fort of Giribita, to the west. Both date from the 17th century and played a crucial role in defending the Tagus estuary and the port of Lisbon. The Fort of São Bruno currently shows some signs of degradation and is not open to the public, while the Fort of Giribita, also known as the Fort of Nossa Senhora de Porto Salvo, is in a better state of preservation, with a royal coat of arms still visible at its main entrance, although it is also not accessible to visitors.
This sandy area offers a more serene environment, being a preferred spot for residents of the surrounding area looking for a space to enjoy the coast. The tranquility of the beach is one of its main attractions. From here, the landscape stretches out, allowing for open views over the Tagus estuary. On days of good visibility, it is possible to contemplate the silhouette of the 25 de Abril Bridge and, in the distance, the figure of Cristo Rei, elements that frame the coastal scenery with a touch of Lisbon familiarity.
