Praia de Algés is located in the low-lying area of Algés, in the municipality of Oeiras, positioned next to the mouth of the Ribeira de Algés. It is one of the closest beaches to the center of Lisbon, approximately 9.5 kilometers from the capital. The sandy area is flanked by two jetties that provide it with a natural delimitation and an interesting perspective over the Tejo estuary and the Atlantic Ocean.
One of the most notable elements in the beach's landscape is the VTS Tower (Vessel Traffic Service), a structure of striking architecture, designed by architect Gonçalo Byrne and awarded the "Conde de Oeiras" Municipal Architecture Prize. This tower, located about 300 meters from the shoreline, serves as a visual and scenic reference point for visitors to the beach.
In the 19th century and until the mid-1960s, Praia de Algés was one of the most sought-after beaches by Lisbon's inhabitants. At that time, its sandy area was significantly more extensive, stretching to Cruz Quebrada. The construction of modern infrastructures in the area profoundly altered its configuration, resulting in the narrower sandy area observed today, approximately 230 meters long.
Currently, the beach is frequented by those seeking a moment of tranquility by the river, to relax, read a book, or enjoy the sunset. It is important to note that Praia de Algés is classified as "wild," meaning it has no surveillance. Furthermore, competent authorities advise against swimming, as the water is not classified for this purpose.
Praia de Algés has been the target of a redevelopment project, resulting from an agreement between the Oeiras Municipal Council and the Lisbon Port Authority. The objective is to revitalize this space and improve its conditions for public enjoyment.
Among the interventions already carried out, or in the planning phase, are improvements to landscaping and the installation of equipment that promotes sports practice and well-being. Recently, new benches, resting tables, palm trees to provide shade, and bicycle racks were placed on the beach, making the location more inviting. Although the municipality aims for the beach to eventually meet bathing conditions in the medium term, for now, interventions focus on improving its surroundings and support infrastructures.
