Praia da Rata is located in Monte Estoril, within the municipality of Cascais, marking a point of interest on the well-known coastline connecting Cascais and Estoril. It is strategically positioned next to the "paredão," the popular seaside promenade that invites moments of leisure by the sea.
Situated in a predominantly pedestrian area, the beach benefits from its integration into Monte Estoril's urban environment, offering unobstructed views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding coastal landscape. It is easily identifiable by its surroundings and central position in this area.
Known locally as Praia da Rata, this cove also goes by the name Praia das Moitas, frequently used for visitors. The original designation "Rata" has a peculiar history, dating back to times when small rodents roamed the area due to old sewage outlets.
Despite the curious origin of the name, it is important to emphasize that the beach and its waters are now completely clean. The name, however, persists in popular memory, giving rise to puns and a cultural and even humorous aspect, distinctive of the place.
Praia da Rata is a modest-sized cove, characterized by a small stretch of golden sand. Its formation is influenced by a lateral pontoon, which contributes to the accumulation of sand, creating a welcoming space for those seeking to enjoy the sun and tranquility.
Entering the sea at this beach features some rocky areas, therefore requiring some attention from those who bathe there. The waters are generally calm, making it a suitable place for a serene swim. In its setting, a modern building, designed by architect Gonçalo Byrne, stands where the old Hotel Estoril-Sol once was, shaping the seaside landscape.
One of the most distinctive elements of Praia da Rata is the presence of the Alberto Romano Oceanic Pool. This saltwater pool, integrated into the coastal landscape, offers a safe and inviting space for swimming, particularly appreciated by children and young people, providing an alternative to the sea waters.
In addition to the pool, proximity to the "paredão" offers added value for visitors. In the surrounding area, outdoor fitness equipment can be found, encouraging physical exercise with ocean views. The beach pontoon is, at times, the scene of yoga sessions, especially at sunrise, emphasizing the well-being atmosphere that the place can provide.
