Queen's Beach

Category: Nature > Beach

District: Lisboa > Cascais > Cascais

Location

Praia da Rainha is located in the heart of Cascais village, integrated into its historic area. It is characterized by being a small, secluded sandy beach, nestled between rock formations and dwellings that rise on the surrounding cliffs. Access to the sandy area is exclusively on foot, via stairs, from Largo da Praia da Rainha, a square that precedes the descent and offers a unique perspective over the cove. Its central position, adjacent to Rua Frederico de Arouca, one of the oldest and best-known arteries of the center, gives it a unique urban setting.

A Name with History

The name of this beach has an origin directly linked to the Portuguese monarchy. History tells that Queen D. Amélia, consort of King D. Carlos I, had this sandy area as one of her favorite places to enjoy sea baths during the royal family's stays in Cascais. Her preference for this singular spot earned it the designation that endures to this day, giving it a special character and a touch of royalty.

A Small Refuge in the Center

With a small sandy area, approximately fifty meters, Praia da Rainha is an invitation to enjoy typically calm and clear waters. Its configuration, sheltered by rock formations and cliffs, provides a serene and safe environment, making it particularly appreciated by those seeking a quiet space to relax and enjoy the coast. Its crystal-clear waters are ideal for swimming. During the bathing season, the beach is supervised by lifeguards, and has showers and toilet facilities for greater comfort. On days of higher influx, the space can become more crowded, reflecting the popularity of this coastal spot.

Surroundings and Contemplation

In addition to sea bathing, Praia da Rainha offers a picturesque setting for contemplation. From Largo da Praia da Rainha, before descending to the sandy area, visitors can enjoy unobstructed views over Cascais cove and the blue ocean, making it a pleasant place to watch the sunset. Its proximity to the historic environment and the pulse of Cascais village contributes to an enriching experience, where the natural beauty of the beach unites with the characteristic atmosphere of the urban center.
