Praia da Foz do Sizandro is located in the municipality of Torres Vedras, on the Atlantic coast. Its name comes from being the point where the Sizandro River flows into the ocean. It is situated at Largo da Foz, in the locality of Foz do Sizandro, slightly south of the village of Santa Cruz. The area is accessible via a bridge that crosses the river, allowing direct access to the sandy beach.
The natural setting of this beach is marked by the meeting point between the Sizandro River and the Atlantic Ocean. During certain periods of the year, especially drier seasons, the river mouth may temporarily close due to sand accumulation, resulting in a considerable extension of the sandy area, stretching to the cliff further south. This natural phenomenon creates a dynamic and constantly changing landscape.
The sandy area of Praia da Foz do Sizandro stands out for hosting one of the main dune systems in the municipality of Torres Vedras, which contributes to the ecological richness of the site. The Sizandro River itself, near its mouth, constitutes one of the most relevant wetlands north of Lisbon. This ecosystem is a privileged habitat for various bird species, which either reside here permanently or stop over during their migratory routes. There is a bird observation post, inviting contemplation of the local avifauna.
With its wave conditions, this beach is a sought-after spot for wave sports enthusiasts throughout the year. Furthermore, its waters and proximity to the river frequently attract fishermen. For those who enjoy observing nature, the surrounding environment, with its biodiversity and the meeting point between the river and the sea, offers a tranquil and captivating setting for a day outdoors.
