Cruz Quebrada Beach is located in the urban area of Cruz Quebrada-Dafundo, in the locality of Cruz Quebrada, belonging to the municipality of Oeiras. It is an oceanic beach that is part of Portugal's coastline, bathed by the Atlantic waters. It stands out for being at the mouth of the Jamor River, a striking element of its landscape. Its urban position, close to infrastructures such as the train station, makes it easily accessible for those exploring the region.
This beach has a rich history, having been one of the first summer resorts for Lisbon inhabitants in the 19th century, due to its proximity to the capital. It was formerly known as "Praia do Garrafão" (Jug Beach), a name that evokes the tradition of its frequenters bringing a jug of red wine to share during family lunches on the beach. This designation highlights a period when the beach was a popular meeting point, especially for those seeking a more affordable day of leisure.
The sandy area of Cruz Quebrada Beach is considerably large, although it narrows towards the west. Along the waterline, small scattered pebbles can be observed. The beach is flanked by two jetties, which, despite being partially damaged, play a role in protecting the sandy stretch and frame the mouth of the Jamor River. The landscape is dominated by the presence of the river meeting the ocean, offering a unique perspective. It is also a space that, due to its tranquility, allows for relaxed walks, including with pets, and is sometimes the scene of environmental cleanup initiatives.
Cruz Quebrada Beach is an urban beach that is not classified as an official bathing area by the municipality of Oeiras, nor does it have a Blue Flag. On site, there is a warning from the Portuguese Environment Agency indicating "Bathing Discouraged". This classification is due to the need for continuous and consistent water quality analysis records over several bathing seasons, requirements that this beach does not meet. The mouth of the Jamor River is a factor influencing water quality, with the possibility of occasional discharges into the river reaching the beach. Although not an official bathing area, some visitors choose to frequent the beach for various leisure and relaxation activities, valuing its proximity and atmosphere. It is important to note that the beach has no surveillance.
