Calada Beach is nestled on the coast of the municipality of Mafra, in the locality of São Lourenço. Bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, this beach is located in a natural cove, which gives it a distinct and secluded environment. It is accessible via a paved road that follows the descent to the sandy beach. At the top of the cliffs flanking the cove, the landscape is marked by agricultural fields and some dwellings, adding a rural touch to the coastal scenery.
It is characterized by a vast and wide sandy beach, shaped like a shell, offering an inviting area for visitors. The imposing cliffs that embrace it, both to the north and south, create natural protection against the wind, making it particularly welcoming. At the ends of the beach, the white sand gives way to pebble areas, which complement the landscape and add a touch of uniqueness to the place. It is a space that emanates serene natural beauty and a sense of seclusion.
During the bathing season, Calada Beach is usually quite busy, revealing itself as a place with a lively atmosphere, although in winter it maintains a quietness that makes it less visited. It is a preferred meeting point for fishermen and local residents, which contributes to its genuine and local atmosphere. The surrounding cliffs, in addition to being impressive, shelter some local fauna, such as wild rabbits, partridges, and owls; it is also possible to spot harmless snakes, which make these rocks their habitat.
The sea at Calada Beach exhibits variable behavior, capable of being both calm and having stronger waves, which adds dynamism to the beach experience. For water sports enthusiasts, such as surfing and bodyboarding, the beach offers interesting waves, especially at lower tide. In the northern zone, there are conditions for waves that form over a reef, while in the southern zone, on certain occasions, good waves can also be found. It is also a suitable location for recreational fishing. The water quality and bathers' safety are recognized annually by the attribution of the Blue Flag, and the beach is a supervised location during the bathing season.
