Praia da Baleia, often also referred to as Praia do Sul, is located on the southern edge of the village of Ericeira, integrated into its urban area. This strategic position places it in an easily accessible area, providing a coastal experience close to the heart of the locality.
The name by which this beach is known, "Praia da Baleia" (Whale Beach), dates back to a singular event in the 19th century. It is believed that in 1872 a large cetacean washed ashore on this very sandy stretch, an event that became ingrained in collective memory and gave the beach its most distinctive designation.
This sandy area, though of contained extension, benefits from natural protection that makes it more sheltered from the prevailing winds in the region. Its waters tend to be calm, inviting relaxing swims. However, at certain times, especially in autumn and winter, maritime conditions prove favorable for activities such as surfing and skimboarding. The water temperature typically registers values between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius.
Praia da Baleia is a highly frequented location, sought after by both families and water sports enthusiasts. During the bathing season, surveillance is ensured for the safety of users. The environmental quality and safety of the beach are recognized by the hoisting of the Blue Flag, a symbol of excellence that enhances the experience of bathers. It is also possible to observe the traditional beach tents, which add a particular color to the scenery.
