The Póvoa de Santa Iria Urban Park is located in the town of Póvoa de Santa Iria, part of the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira. The park is situated along the bank of the Tagus River, extending into an area that naturally connects to Fisherman's Beach. Its creation was part of a broader project for the requalification of the riverside area in the southern part of the municipality, highlighting the connection between urbanization and the estuary landscape.
Covering an area of six hectares, this urban park is dominated by vast grassy areas that provide ample open space for enjoyment. Its proximity to the Tagus River gives it a serene atmosphere and an unobstructed view of the estuarine basin. Although the grassy areas are the main feature, it is expected that, over time, the presence of trees will become more noticeable, further enriching the landscape's diversity.
Within the park, the "Póvoa and the River" museum nucleus offers a point of contact with local history. This cultural space aims to recall and materialize the memories of the close relationship between the river and the communities that have explored it over the centuries. In particular, the connection with the Avieiro community is valued, whose traditional fishing activities are still present locally, with the existence of support structures for their work.
The Póvoa de Santa Iria Urban Park offers various infrastructures dedicated to recreation and sports. For the younger ones, there is a children's playground and a youth park, offering various entertainment options. Urban sports enthusiasts will find a dedicated skate park, and for those looking to stay in shape outdoors, there is an outdoor gym available. An amphitheater complements the park's amenities, offering a space for gatherings and events.
