Situated in the urbanization of Quinta de Rana, in São Domingos de Rana, within the municipality of Cascais, the Quinta de Rana Urban Park offers a green space amidst a more built-up environment. Its location provides a refuge for those seeking moments of tranquility or outdoor activities in the area.
The park spans an area of two hectares, which was once part of an old recreational estate, also incorporating land that served as an agricultural zone. Its creation resulted from a project to recover the architectural heritage of the municipality of Cascais. Vestiges of its original purpose can still be observed today, with elements of the irrigation and water utilization system marking the agricultural presence of the past. This space is, therefore, a testament to local history and its relationship with the land.
One of the most distinctive aspects of the Quinta de Rana Urban Park is the central role of water in its design and environment. Water acts as an element that connects the different points of the park, flowing through an ingenious system. It is possible to follow its course from the old aqueducts and a complex network of channels, which directed the flow, to a more naturalized watercourse that culminates in a water mirror, creating a serene atmosphere connected to nature.
Within the park, there is a space dedicated to the life of butterflies, the Butterfly House. This site was designed for the study and observation of these insects in their various stages of development. Besides being a center for species preservation, the Butterfly House plays an important role in promoting environmental education, allowing visitors closer contact with local biodiversity and the importance of protecting it.
