Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles Urban Park is located in the union of the parishes of Massamá and Monte Abraão, in the municipality of Sintra. This green space is strategically positioned between Avenida Afonso Costa and Rua Ribeiro Sanches, in the locality of Monte Abraão. Its placement on a plot with a slope between these two streets gives it a scenic particularity, creating paths that connect the higher to the lower elevations.
Resulting from a significant requalification concluded in 2021, the park covers an approximate area of 19,250 square meters. The intervention designed a network of pedestrian paths that facilitate the exploration of the space and the connection between its different areas. For the comfort of visitors, resting areas with urban furniture were created. Public lighting, equipped with LED technology, ensures a safe and modern environment at dusk. The choice of plants, with diverse species and the inclusion of dry meadow, reflects a sustainable approach, aiming to optimize water usage.
The park's name pays homage to Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, a pivotal figure in Portuguese landscape architecture, who passed away in 2020. His vision and work left a profound mark on the urban and landscape planning of the country. In the Sintra region, Ribeiro Telles was fundamental in projects such as the conception of Mira Sintra neighborhood and the creation of the Sintra-Cascais Protected Landscape Area, which would later give rise to the current Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. This urban park is, thus, a recognition of his legacy and his philosophy of integrating nature into urban environments.
Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles Urban Park was designed to be a meeting and leisure point for those who live in or visit Massamá and Monte Abraão. Its tranquil and well-maintained environment invites relaxed strolls, rest, or moments of outdoor socializing. It is an example of the valorization of green spaces in urban areas, contributing to the improvement of quality of life and offering an oasis of nature in the heart of the locality, suitable for individual or family enjoyment.
