Marshal Carmona Park

Category: Culture and Entertainment > Theme Park

District: Lisboa > Cascais > Cascais > Gandarinha

Location:

Marechal Carmona Park is located in the area known as Gandarinha, in the town of Cascais. This green space is integrated into the urban fabric, offering a tranquil and expansive refuge. Its position invites moments of pause and serenity, distinct from the hustle and bustle of the town centre, yet still easily accessible.

A History of Gardens:

The current configuration of Marechal Carmona Park originated in the 1940s, through the merger of the gardens belonging to the Condes Castro Guimarães Palace and the former property of the Viscount of Gandarinha. However, the use of this area as a leisure space and farm dates back to the 16th century. Over time, the land passed through various hands, with particular emphasis on the creation of a romantic-style park by the Viscount of Gandarinha. This environment was joined by the equally romantic garden of the Palace. In 1944, the two areas were united and opened to the public. Although it had a different official name after 1974, the designation Marechal Carmona persisted and is the one by which the park is predominantly known.

Landscape and Serenity:

Marechal Carmona Park presents a varied and inviting landscape. Visitors will find extensive lawns ideal for moments of relaxation, punctuated by flowerbeds with a diversity of herbaceous plants and shrubs. There is also a denser area, similar to a woodland with large trees that provide shade and coolness.

The paths meander through the vegetation, maintaining a romantic touch that evokes its history. The presence of lakes and water courses complements the scenery, creating calm environments. It is a place where local fauna can be observed, such as ducks swimming in the lakes or the striking peacocks strolling across the lawns, contributing to an atmosphere of serenity.

Distinctive Elements:

In addition to its green and natural area, Marechal Carmona Park integrates several specific points that enrich the visitor's experience. It is home to the Municipal Children's and Youth Library, a space dedicated to reading for younger audiences.

With families in mind, the park offers a diverse children's playground area, with zones adapted for different ages. There is also a field designed for playing traditional games. The building housing the Condes Castro Guimarães Museum is an integral part of the park's landscape, standing out for its architecture and history.

A Space to Enjoy:

Marechal Carmona Park offers multiple settings for visitors to enjoy their time. It is a place conducive to rest and contemplation, whether by strolling along its paths or simply sitting on the lawns or by the lakes.

The lawns invite more active leisure moments or family picnics. For a more structured break, there is a cafeteria with an outdoor terrace located near one of the lakes, offering a relaxing atmosphere. On Saturdays, the park gains additional vibrancy with the staging of the Organic Market, attracting those seeking fresh and local products.
